A Hero in my eyes:)

1.A hero becomes a hero when they do something to help others. Heroes think about other people before themselves and take time out of their day to help someone in need. To me a hero isn't someone who necessarily has to do something so stupendous or great, like saving some one's life. It can be something average, like helping with homework, because they could just say, "Go ask your teacher, I'm busy." But if they choose to help it shows they actually care.

2.The Hero in my Eyes project was a writing assignment where we wrote about important people in our lives who have influenced us and have been good role models and heroes. I chose to write about my mom because she is a single mother who never complains or gives up.

3. To get to the final product I first thought of people to write about. I finally chose one person that I thought was worthy.I interviewed my mom After that I wrote our my first draft, which was edited and revised by a few of my classmates. I changed everything that needed was suggested to accommodating and then started on my final draft.

4.I learned, from interviewing my mom, that the world doesn't have to revolve around me and there are people in the world who have more important needs than mine. I realized that I could make a difference in some one's life for the better. Some challenges that occurred would be choosing the person I was going to write about because it was hard to choose to write about my mom over my best friend. Something that I would make different would be to put more showing not telling and description. This will help me later because I can become a better writer if I try harder and add more details.

5. One Habit of Mind that I used would be Wonder because when I fixed the things that my classmates and teachers edited for me it was to make it better.

Character Sketch

Why my Head is High
“I want to help others and a lot of people at the nursing homes don’t have family come to visit them.” I watched as my mother’s generous, almond colored eyes gleamed in the light. Her blazing red, shoulder length hair showed off her bright teeth and smile. She sat in our car and swayed back and forth to the music, like a palm tree at the beach. As we got out to go inside she didn’t even think twice or feel a morsel of laziness. She opened the door for Gary, the other volunteer, who is tall and slender and limps when he walks. Once inside the building, we walked into a small room, filled with tables and a television. Sunshine poured down through the windows, and seemed to singsong, “Good morning.” Medicine and hospital whiffs rushed up my nose. Ladies and men sat in chairs, while some were in different types that allowed them to roll around. A few wheezed ferociously, like a hibernating bear, their mouths open and tongues hanging out. Many mouthed lyrics to the song, releasing cooing sounds, like a newborn baby.
I could see their eyes, faded with age like a person’s favorite shirt washed too many times. The nursing home residents’ wrinkled faces altered from alert to excited as we walked in. Toothless smiles were shown as my mother handed out packets of lyrics, filled with church gospels. “Amazing Grace…” My mother’s high-pitched, squeaky voice filled the room. I imagined it would belong to a mouse, if mice were able to speak.I remember my mom saying, “It makes me feel good, just to see them smile. I realized it doesn’t always have to be about me. I could make a difference in someone’s life!” I could now see what she meant as I found myself singing along with people I had never even met, until that day, with pure joy. People were rocking back and forth, as if they were sitting upon a church pew.“How does she do this?” I wondered. How does she have that ability to brighten up someone’s day like that? She works so hard, for the five days of the week, caring and nurturing babies as if she were their mother. Every time I’m feeling down she’s always right by my side asking what’s wrong. You could tell she cares enough for the answer, once the tears trail down she is always my shoulder to cry on. I find myself walking alone sometimes thinking how big a loser I am and how I could have done better if I didn’t fail so much. Then my mom’s famous line appears in the back of my mind, “Keep your head up high.”I never hear her complain. She wakes up cheerful and in a good mood, like a cheerleader rooting for the football team to win. Being a single parent, she has to work twice as hard to take care of me. “I never regretted having you at twenty-four years old. I never would have given you away.” Hearing this is music to my ears. It brings a smile to my face and reminds me how special I really am to have someone as dependable and hardworking as my mom. I keep following her around the nursing home, with my head up high.

The Origin of Zero

Some things from the article that struck me would be how it says how the symbol for zero has changed over the years. I never thought about where zero came from and it surprised me how the Mayans represented it as just a dot. Even though it was the Chinese that thought of the open circle, that we now use today, I think that the Mayans are the ones who should get all the credit because they are the ones who invented it. I think the whole world found out about zero when the Mayans first thought of it. It is like when new discoveries are found and they are put on the news, except in this case it was probably just spread around in words.

Cry me a River

Catching the signal from one of her friends, Angela brushed her skirt, took a deep breath and walked towards where he was sitting. “I never meant to hurt you, you know, ”she said as she leaned towards his lunch table. “How can I make this up to you?” Her long blonde hair curled at the ends and her baby blue eyes twinkled like stars. As much as he hated her he could never let her go. She was a part of him. Darren glared at her for a few seconds, which seemed like forever to Angela. He stared into her eyes and remembered the first time he ever saw her. She was at the park, playing football with all the guys. If she fell or got trampled she would always get right back up. She was a soldier, never backing down or quitting, until she got what she wanted. His insides were a volcano, ready to erupt. He realized he shouldn’t follow his heart this time. “What you did is unforgivable. It’s just too late to apologize.”Angela’s mouth quivered, she always thought she was irresistible. She ran to the bathroom and nearly drowned in her tears. It’s really over, she realized.

The Puppy From Heaven

I wondered if I was dreaming. In my grandmother's arms laid a beautiful, innocent puppy from heaven. Her chocolate colored eyes gleamed in the light. Her pink tongue looked moist and smooth, like an eraser. She licked me, causing my laugh to come out uncontrollably, in surprise. She had a button like nose, with white silky fur, like snow. Her paws were tiny, and her claws were not even capable of scratching anything yet. She reminded me of a cotton ball. My mom thought of her name, Snowflake! I squeezed the poor pup, not meaning to hurt her,she was just so cute! I was chided and deprecated that if I kept it up, with the squeezing, I would strangle her to death.

I thought to myself, "This is going to be so easy!" Then, reality struck. Yellow urine, mushy droppings, and multicolored vomit visuals raced through my head. I realized I would have to bribe her with hard and disgusting treats, which only appeal to dogs. She would learn new tricks and how to become obedient. For example, since I was an only child, before I got my dog it was all about me. There was no one else who needed to be taken care of, to be played with, or disciplined. Before it seemed like the world revolved around me! I felt like when an only child finds out their parents are having another baby. Let me tell you, it's a bittersweet feeling alright! Of course he or she is really excited to have a sibling, but in the back of their mind they know they will have to share things with other kids now. In my case I had to share my house with a new puppy.

I remember watching the movie "Beethoven" and how the grizzly bear sized dog would gallop around, like a horse, and do all the mischievious things he felt like doing. I imagined my minitiare Maltese puppy breaking the topilet seat and getting it stuck on her neck, like in the movie. My face froze, in awe and my heart started to beat faster and faster. Honestly I thought it woud actually jump out of my chest, and explode! I took a second look at her and fell right back into my state of mind. She couldn't do anything like that, well I hoped. Despite all my worries and fears of my new responsibilities I would have to do, I decided to take up the challenge of having someone new in the family. From the start I already knew that I would love my dog, Snowflake forever, and she would love me too. She taught me to care about others than myself.

Sensory Detail:Sound

The green, crisp leaves fly through the air. They perform various flips and twirls, like a gymnast. They land perfectly to the floor, since they are as light as a feather.

The sun above blazes furiously, like a fire, and lights the world,as the day starts off.The lemurs' black and white, zebra striped tail flails and whithers around, like a snake. The branches of the tree sway from under them.Whoosh,whoosh.

As one lemur travels to a different tree the other follows, like in a Nascar race."I got you now!"One seems to yell.In their own little language they speak to each other, but to me it makes me imagine monkeys in the jungle, fighting over the ripest banana.

When the lemurs are finally exhausted, they're stomachs rattle, like an exhaust system of an old vehicle. They pounce on little mammals and eat the beautiful rosy colored jungle flowers.

Finally, after the sun has set there eyes stay open for just another second,as they are drifting off to sleep. For the last time that day they view the world, their playground, until their eyes disagree and their tiredness finally get the best of them.http://margaretnoble.net/blog/wild-lemurs/

The Locker Problem Solution

The Locker Problem Final Draft Illiana Guirant September 30ThT, 2009
The solution to the locker problem is that thirty one lockers are open while nine hundred sixty nine are left closed. Thirty one lockers are open because you could only square each number until thirty one. If you tried to square each number bigger than thirty one you would end up going over the number one thousand, which is how many lockers there are overall. For example, 32², or 32x32=1024. Obviously 1024 is 24 more than 1,000

In class we realized that if you wanted to find out which number of lockers changed the state, when the student touched it, you would have to look at its factors.
FACTORS
1X36 1 36
2X18 2 18
3X12 3 12
4X9 4 09
6X6 6 06 Therefore all the factors of 36 are 1,2,3,4,6,12,and 18.So those are the lockers that are changed by state.

S.L.O.B Character - What I Did This Weekend

Dear Diary,

You don’t know how angry I am! Today darn Lilly was reaching out to touch the Mary statue right on her red painted heart. What was she thinking? She is not a part of us and she never will be. How dare she! I furiously shut my piano and slammed the door closed to my room. I know Lilly and Rosaleen are hiding something from my sisters and I .Sooner or later the truth is bound to come out.

As I sat in my room, all day, I tried to distract myself by reading and grading my students’ homework. But I couldn't concentrate on anything! Every time I feel like this I pray to my beloved Mary .I knelt to my knees asking for forgiveness on how I handled today’s situation. Sometimes I wish she could talk back and tell me what to do and what is right.

My sister August has pounded on my bedroom door fifteen times today, I counted. Why should I answer? I feel like she is on Lilly’s side instead of her own sister’s. I played the cello for a while, until evening came and I realized I was starving and exhausted.

When it was finally so late that I knew everyone in the pink house was asleep, I creaked the door open slowly and tiptoed to the fridge. I grabbed the honey and bread and chewed ferociously, since I had not eaten since breakfast! On my way back to collapse on my bed ,my toe crashed into a chair’s leg. The plate in my hand flew and seemed to perform flips over and over again until it met the ground and shattered. I shrieked in surprise and though to myself, “This is just not my day!”I hope tomorrow will be better.

Goodbye for now,
June Boatwright

Favorite Fictional Heroes

This is Bat Man!.He is my favorite super-hero because he goes out of his way to save the world and uses his powers for good, rather than evil. After his parents were killed Bruce Wayne(his secret identity)decides to start fighting crime. He lives in Gotham City,of course, where he defeats his arch enemy, works as an industrialist, saves lives ,and cruises in his bat mobile! This super-hero is unlike other heroes because he makes the comic books and movies he's in action-packed and makes me want to read/see more.Unlike every other hero Bat Man has no superhuman powers! He has only trained himself to have proficient reflexes and a very sharp mind.I love you BAT MAN!

What is Math?What is Physics?

Math to me is something that everyone at some point needs to learn. It is found in every place and part of the world.Math isn't just found in equations on a test!It is also in nature. Some spirals you see in shells,or pine cones, are based on patterns of numbers!Who uses math?Every human being on this planet will or has used math in some point in life. For example,if you wanted to share a pie equally with your family you would use fractions and counting.Doing math is kind of like a big puzzle of numbers. When you do math that's when it's like solving the puzzle. The big puzzle of numbers...=D

Another interesting subject is physics. It analyzes natural substances, including matter, energy, motion and force.Physics is even in snowboarding!Without physics you wouldn't have friction.Without friction you wouldn't be able to coast down the mountain.Every time we move and breathe we use physics.Just think if it didn't exist. We wouldn't even be able to stand up!Everything that takes up space uses physics.
